During the first half of his career Doig wrote from a writing studio in his home that was dark because of shade trees preventing sunlight from coming. After he and his wife, Carol, moved to their new—and last residence—he had commanding views of ocean and it brought a brightening within his intense focus and attention to details and plot.  Carol Doig says that following a long day of writing and editing his stories, Doig would join her with a pre-dinner libation and consciously savor what a good, fortunate life they had together.
