Dogs harassing wildlife has been a known problem for a long time. Here, an etching dated to 1690 showing a domestic dog chasing a heron off its nest at a wetland. Few dog owners who take their pets to lakes, ponds and rivers for swims ever reflect on why they don't see more nesting birds.
